About Security Settings in Outlook Express
- First, go to Tools à Options
- Then, click Options
- After that, click on the Security tab from the Options box
- Now, you can do the following things here
a)Virus Protection Section: The first section is of Virus Protection. Here, the Security Zones are basically those pages which you've deemed safe to be visited. When you have Internet zone clicked, you can easily go to any webpage, which makes the thing easier for you. The Restricted tab will open only those pages from the websites, which are safe and which are in your not in your restricted list
b)‘Warn me when other applications try to send mail as me’ Section: The next section is the one that reads “Warn me when other applications try to send mail as me”. You must definitely click this box as it helps in preventing programs or viruses from sending emails using your account. This will curb the spread of auto-send viruses
c)‘Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus’ Section: The next sections is the one which reads, “Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus.” This was added only to Outlook Express version 6.0, but it a very nice addition to this email management program. It prevents several programs from being downloaded on your system which reduces the risk of downloading a virus mistakenly
d)Secure Mail Section: This section handles the acquisition of electronic ID's, etc. This is an extreme protection that is not needed mostly unless you are dealing with highly sensitive information. You can get a digital id from a number of sources. You just have to click ‘Get Digital ID’ and this will provide you with many places that will give you an id.
These are all the security settings that Outlook Express email application provides you. This obviously doesn't mean that your email client is 100% secure. For further protection, you must have an antivirus program.
